Hi, I’m Cat and eating keto has literally saved my life. My keto diet has helped me lose over 90 pounds (and counting)!

I have never been able to successfully lose weight in my life until now. I switched to a ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting, and the weight has been falling off easily.

I have some health challenges including PCOS, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), an underactive thyroid, and insulin resistance.  These have been a major factor in my weight gain. I have been reversing all of these by losing weight with keto and intermittent fasting.

I started keto a few years back as a last ditch effort to get my blood sugar and weight under control. I was waking up every hour at night to go to the bathroom and had a terrible thirst I couldn’t satisfy. I suspected it could be diabetes, so I ordered a glucose meter from Amazon.

The next morning, I took my fasting blood sugar. Diabetes is diagnosed when your fasting blood sugar measures 126 mg/dL or higher. The meter read 191 mg/dL.

I haven’t had the best experiences with doctors in the past, and I didn’t exactly relish the idea of going to one now. Diabetes, however, is serious stuff. So, as a last ditch effort, I decided to put myself on a ketogenic diet and an herbal protocol of my own design. (I’m an herbalist as part of my day job.)

I knew the sceince was in favor of keto causing weight loss. But, my entire life, I’d been taught. to avoid eating fat like the plague. The idea of eating mostly fat made me nervous. I weighed myself every day, sometimes twice a day, just to check if I had gained weight from eating all that fat.

Instead of gaining weight, I lost 60lbs. It came off quickly and easily. I was never hungry like I had been on every other diet. My blood glucose readings came down to prediabetic levels.

Then, I let life get in the way. I tried to do everything and be everything for everyone else. My diet, including menu planning, meal prep, cooking, and clean up all take time, and I routinely put myself last.

Last year, I went on and off keto. I lost and gained the same 20 pounds four times. Four times! Finally, I hit a wall. A switch flipped in my head. I couldn’t continue living like this. I had to matter. I had to care for myself as vigorously as I looked after everyone else. Otherwise, I would have nothing left to give.

I committed to getting healthy. I delegated household responsibilities instead of shouldering it all myself. I got the rest I needed and the space to plan my meals, organize my shopping lists, and the time to work out. I went back to krav maga classes and back to the gym for resistance training.

Today, I’m 0ver 90 pounds lighter, at the halfway point of my goal. My blood glucose readings are back down to normal range. My hair is coming back in thicker. My menstrual cycles are finally regular.  I’m more of a badass than ever before.

Like a lot of people, I tend to put myself last. Daily postings of my meals, favorite tools, successes and failures will help keep me focused on my goals.

To help others navigate the keto lifestyle.

I recall what it was like in the beginning. Is keto just about eating unlimited amounts of bacon? Do I count total carbs or net carbs? Are carrots keto?

I get it. This way of eating is a lifestyle. It’s a major shift from the carbtastic sandwiches and pasta and potatoes that we are all used to eating. It took me a while to figure it all out. If I can make that easier for others, that’s a good thing.
